As you may have noticed, hyaluronic acid is a popular ingredient in skincare; and for good reason. It offers a variety of benefits for the skin, especially in regard to anti-aging.

Woman with serum

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Most abundantly found in the skin, it is also located in the eyes and joints.

What are some of the skincare benefits of hyaluronic acid?

The biggest benefit of hyaluronic acid is the effect it has on the skin’s moisture retention. Because of this, it works as a terrific moisturizer that significantly helps with dryness. In addition to that, it also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What are some recommended skincare products that contain it?

    • PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum – This is one of our favorite skincare products, let alone one that contains hyaluronic acid. It provides instant hydration that penetrates deep into the skin and lasts. It also helps to encourage an increase in the skin’s own hyaluronic acid production.
    • SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel – Another great hydrating product, this serum is perfect for aging skin in need of a smoother complexion.
    • SkinCeuticals Retexturizing Activator – This one is very gentle making it perfect for those with sensitive skin. Helps with the feel and texture of the skin as well.

Which product above is best to use?

That depends on your skin type specifically and what your skincare goals are. Scheduling a complimentary visit with our Esthetician Jamie Popp can help you determine that.

As you can see, hyaluronic acid offers a variety of benefits and should be a part of everyone’s skincare routine. If you want to maintain youthful-looking skin, contact our office today.

Fall is here and that means leaves changing colors, cozy hoodies, and pumpkin everything. Despite some of those things that make the season so great, the cooler, drier weather that comes with them is not the best for our skin. That’s why this time of year, it’s important to adjust your skincare routine. Here are some ways to do just that:

  • Fall Woman Skin CareUse an exfoliator. Exfoliating helps to remove any dead skin cells, which in turn, improves the overall appearance of the skin. We recommend the SkinCeuticals Micro-Exfoliating Scrub because it’s gentle enough to use daily without causing any irritation to the skin.
  • Avoid long showers. Limit your time spent in the shower to 5-10 minutes. This will help minimize the removal of the skin’s natural oils which are crucial in preventing it from drying out.
  • Moisturize daily. This is important to do right after you get out of the shower as it helps to lock in any moisture. PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum is a great option as its buttery soft texture seals in moisture and helps to replenish any that may be needed. If extra hydration is needed, try using a heavier base cream.
  • Wear an SPF daily. Even though it’s typically not as sunny as other times of the year, harmful UV rays are still present and sunscreen should be worn at all times. We love the SkinCeuticals Daily Brightening UV Defense SPF 30. Not only because it’s an effective sunscreen but it also helps in fading any skin discolorations.
  • Drink lots of water. It’s important not only to moisturize on the outside but on the inside as well. Staying hydrated will help flush out any toxins and promote overall healthier skin.

Follow these tips and your skin shouldn’t fall victim to the harsh weather of the season. If you do however find yourself with concerns, contact the skincare professionals at Lisa S. Ball NP today!

September is Healthy Aging Month, which is a great opportunity to focus on the overall well-being of your skin. Did you know that as we age, aside from those annoying fine lines and wrinkles that pop up, the risk for skin cancer also increases? The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that by the age of 70, roughly 1 in 5 Americans will develop some form of skin cancer. Older Woman Gardening

That’s why it’s so important to stay on top of the health of your skin. Here are some ways to do just that:

  • Avoid the sun between 10am and 4pm. This is when the sun peaks in the sky and UV rays are at their strongest.
  • Wear sunscreen daily. Even on cloudy, winter days, harmful UV rays are still prevalent. We recommend our patients wear a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30, reapplying every two hours.
  • If outside for extended periods, wear a hat with a wide brim. This will not only provide shade for your face but also increased protection from sun exposure.
  • Regular skin examinations. We recommend our patients get their skin checked for any cancerous lesions at least once a year. Patients with a history of skin cancer are advised to be seen more frequently.
  • Avoid tanning. This one cannot be emphasized enough. Aside from increasing the risk of skin cancer, it can also contribute to speeding up the aging process.

These tips will not only help to keep your skin looking its best, but also decrease your risk of skin cancer. If you would like to schedule an appointment, call us at 716-688-0020 or click here.

Preparing for a wedding can be stressful. So why add to that stress by not assuring yourself flawless skin for the big day? Our aesthetician Jamie Popp shares a timeline of when she recommends skincare treatments for brides and grooms-to-be.

Wedding Woman with Flawless Skin

One Year

It is recommended to begin a consistent and customized skincare routine. “Starting at this time is ideal because it gives patients plenty of time to find out which treatments and/or products work best for their skin. From there, it is much easier to plan a regimen moving forward,” says Jamie.

Seven Months

Botox or Dysport: Botox and Dysport are cosmetic treatments that reduce or eliminate facial lines and wrinkles. The results usually last about 3-4 months, allowing ample time for any touch-ups that may be needed down the road.

Lip Fillers: The most popular lip filler we use is Restylane Kysse. This treatment gives the lips a natural, fuller look that lasts about a year.

Six Months

Acne: A HydraFacial or Acne Facial are both ideal options for managing breakouts. Starting at this time will allow several treatments which will help to further improve the condition. It is important to note that depending on the severity of the acne, it may be recommended either treatment sooner.

Four Months

Chemical Peels or Photorejuvenation: Both treatments can help with discoloration, acne scars, and sun spots at varying levels. In regards to which one is right for you, that depends on your specific pigmentation concerns.

Three Months

HydraFacial: “For patients that are not dealing with acne concerns, I recommend starting HydraFacials at this time. I then suggest them to come in monthly, coordinating it so that the third one is the week of the wedding,” says Jamie. “It will give them an amazing bridal glow.”

Dermaplaning: A great way to exfoliate the skin on the face. This treatment involves using a sterile scalpel to gently remove the dead, top layer of skin (along with a fair amount of peach fuzz). This in turn gives a fresh and smooth appearance. As a perfect complement to a HydraFacial, pair the two together for maximum results.

One Month

Botox/Dysport: If a tune-up is needed prior to the wedding it is recommended to have it no closer than a month before. That way if there is any bruising that occurs, it will subside in time.

Week Of

HydraFacial: The gentle nature of the treatment will leave the skin with an immaculate, radiant glow.

As you may have learned over the years, cleaning your face with a washcloth isn’t always enough. To properly get rid of that layer of dead skin cells that often gives a dull, lackluster appearance, something more is usually needed. That’s where microdermabrasion comes in!

Woman Skin Care TLC

What is a Microdermabrasion?

A microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin care treatment, usually performed by an aesthetician, that utilizes medical-grade crystals to gently remove the dead, top layer of the skin.

How does it work?

Using a small hand device, with a rough-edged tip, it is slowly passed over the skin to break apart dead skin cells. This in turn clears up the upper layer of skin while massaging the skin tissue helping to improve circulation.

What can it address?

It can help dry skin, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and superficial scars.

How many treatments are needed?

To achieve the best results, a series of 6-12 treatments spaced a few weeks apart is recommended.

How will my skin look after?

Immediately after treatment, the skin will have a radiant glow. The tone and texture will be most noticeably improved.

Is there any special post-treatment care needed?

The skin will be slightly sensitive after treatment, so it’s important to use both an SPF and moisturizer to keep it protected.

As you can see, a microdermabrasion can be an effective treatment for revitalizing the skin. If you would like to learn more about the process and see if it would be for you, contact the skin care experts at Lisa S. Ball, NP today.

When it comes to the field of dermatology there are a lot of misconceptions out there. That’s why we decided to put together a list of some of the more common ones to help debunk those assumptions.Beautiful Woman Dermatology

Myth: Foods can cause acne.

Now while what you eat can have an influence on the health of your skin, in regards to acne, is usually correlated to genetics. Although foods cannot cause you to get acne, it is possible for them to contribute to it, however.

Myth: Genetics determine how your skin will age.

Another common myth is that genetics play a large role in how your skin ages. Although genetics can play a role, a bigger one is played by your lifestyle and overall health.

Myth: If I get a base tan at a salon, I won’t sunburn outdoors.

This one couldn’t be further from the truth. A tan is actually a sign of damage to your skin and in no way prevents further damage from future sun exposure. The best way to prevent sunburn is to avoid tanning and use sunscreen.

Myth: Any sunscreen will adequately protect my skin from the sun.

A sunscreen must have an SPF of at least 30, combined with ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.  This will help to block both UVA (long-wave radiation which can lead to wrinkling and aging) and UVB (short-wave radiation which can cause sunburn) rays, both of which can lead to skin cancer.

Myth: Once I put on sunscreen for the day, it is not necessary to apply it again.

Sunscreen must be reapplied every two hours or after exposure to water.

Myth: If I shave my hair, it will grow back thicker.

Unfortunately for people with thinning hair, this is not true. Although the hair may appear thicker after shaving, this is just an optical illusion. The hair is exactly the same thickness it was before shaving it.

As you can see, there are a lot of myths in relation to dermatology, but hopefully being aware of some will help you in the future.

Boosters are serums that can be added onto a HydraFacial to help customize the treatment for specific skincare needs. Each booster has its own unique benefits and is very effective in enhancing the overall results of a HydraFacial.HydraFacial Boosters

1) Dermabuilder – Helps to even out skin tone, smooth the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles, and enhance the skin’s overall elasticity.

2) Alastin Trihex-Pro Booster – Clears out damaged collagen and elastin while assisting the skin in developing more. It can also help to improve the overall tone and texture of the skin.

3) Circadia Chrono-Peptide – Further energizes the skin, which in turn, leaves it more radiant and glowing.

The holidays can wreak havoc on your skin. Whether it be from the cold weather or the stress that comes with the season, it’s important to have a good skincare routine in place this time of year. So, we came up with a list of some things that will help to keep your skin looking its best this holiday season.

Holiday Skin Care

  • Don’t crank up the heat. Try to keep your thermostat in the range of 68-72 degrees. Any higher may lead to your skin drying out. And even with keeping it low, consider using a humidifier. This will further help in making the air less dry.
  • Cleanse & moisturize your face daily. Washing your face helps to remove dirt, oil, and debris which can all contribute to acne breakouts. After cleansing, it’s then important to use a moisturizer. This will help your skin to lock in moisture and provide it with continued hydration.
  • Exfoliate at least once a week. Exfoliating helps better absorption of skincare products and further helps in removing any dead skin cells or impurities.
  • Use sunscreen. This one is not commonly followed in the colder months but is very important. The sun’s harmful UV rays are prevalent year-round so wearing an SPF of at least 50 will help to keep your skin protected.
  • Get a Chemical Peel or a HydraFacial. Both of these treatments are a great way to exfoliate and keep your skin looking refreshed and revitalized.

Follow these tips and your skin will be merry and bright this holiday season!
